Pilates

"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure." Joseph Pilates

Our Pilates classes are purposely smaller than traditional gyms to ensure our teachers can deliver a tailored and bespoke session catering for individual needs, such as back or joint problems, and individual abilities.

Reformer Pilates is carried out on beds called reformers. It can be tailored to be a more dynamic and intense workout than a mat class due to the capacity to add resistance to the moves, via a spring system which you can set to suit your ability.

It is also perfect for rehabilitation purposes as it allows you to exercise in a horizontal position. A good example would be if you have knee or hip surgery or an injury, this horizontal position enables you to strengthen the muscles of the leg or hip area through a range of motion using a lighter resistance than your body weight, speeding up your recovery through controlled movement.

The Oak House provides a range of Yoga classes from Yin to Ashtanga Yoga, all carried out in our unique studio settings.

Whether you are looking for an energetic start to the day or a relaxing end in the evening, we’ve got it covered. Some of the benefits you will gain from enjoying regular Yoga classes are, increased flexibility, boosted circulation, improved joint mobility and reduction in stress

Hatha

Popular thinking “in the West” is that Hatha Yoga is about balancing the body and mind. “Ha” represents the esoteric sun, and ‘tha’ the moon. The practice aims to join, yoke or balance these two energies. A Hatha practice typically involves a set of physical and breathing techniques. These are typically practiced more slowly and with more static posture holds than a Vinyasa flow class.

“Hatha” means force and is more traditionally defined as “the yoga of force” or “the means of attaining a state of yoga through force. So Hatha yoga can be considered as anything you might do with the body, including postures, breathing, mantra, mudra and types of visualisation - a complete experience.

Yin

A softer, natural and healing alternative to the modern vinyasa yang styles. Yin soothes and calms, offering us a unique blend of yoga and meditation techniques.

The main differences between a yin and yang yoga practice are that yin postures should be done with the muscles relaxed and be held a long time.

The practice contains a small family of poses, directing the body towards a balanced approach to physical and mental health.

Nidra

Yoga Nidra is an accessible and effortless yoga practice that anyone can do.

Comparisons have been made between Yoga Nidra, meditation and guided meditation. Although there are elements of these within the structure, Yoga Nidra is just simply Yoga Nidra. It is a state of consciousness which is neither sleep nor awake, not a practice or technique but more a process for an effortless state of conscious awakening.

Combing the elements of deep physical rest, the letting go of thought and emotions, the practice of Yoga Nidra results in heightened intelligence, enhanced creativity, improved wellbeing, and the receptiveness that elevates your willingness to be curious of your inner guide and wisdom.

Ashtanga Vinyasa

Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga synchronises breath and movement in a flowing sequence of asanas (postures).

Each asana has a unique choreographed number of movements into and out of it. When practised regularly, it can help to develop strength, flexibility, stamina and help to cultivate an all-round feeling of well being and a still and focussed mind.
Poses (asana) are linked in a sequence with each held for a number of breaths (typically 5) before transitioning through a specific series of movements (Vinyasa) to the next pose.
