Lets Talk About: Ostara
Spring Equinox, or, Ostara as it is also known, is finally here, blossoms are blooming and the light is finally returning, but what is the history of Ostara? And how can we embrace the shift into the next season?
Ostara is a pagan holiday, and observed as one of the eight sabbats in Wiccan traditions, too, generally, it is known as the spring equinox, where we honour the return of warmer, brighter days and close the chapter on the long winter months. The balancing point between the light and the dark. The word Ostara comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess name, Eostre. who represents spring and new beginnings. Traditionally, symbols such as the hare, are used to signify Ostara, as in European medieval times, the hare was a symbol of fertility. Symbols and rituals that represent planting seeds, birth and emergence are also associated with this time of year.
As we enter this next season, we can practice small habit changes and simple rituals to welcome in spring. For example, sowing seeds in your garden, lighting a candle and writing some intentions; green candles represent growth and white candles for renewal, keep your intentions on your altar with fresh flowers or dried herb bundles. It’s also a good window of oppoturnity to look at our ever important diet, and how eating more seasonally can help with our gut health.
